There are many people who have more followers and much more engagement on their posts. But these are the lessons I have learned personally and they may or may not be the same as other people\u2019s experiences.<\/p>\n<p>When LinkedIn enabled long-form publishing on its own site, it offered us another way to reach out to people on its network. Here are the lessons I\u2019ve learned along the way.<\/p>\n<h3>#1. Articles about LinkedIn do best on LinkedIn<\/h3>\n<p>There\u2019s no mystery to this. This is just something I observed by nosing around in my LinkedIn Publisher statistics.<\/p>\n<h3>#2. Not every post will be a winner<\/h3>\n<p>Again, this is no mystery. Not every post of yours will appeal to the average LinkedIn reader, or even to your network. Also, while people visit Facebook to read the news, they do not use LinkedIn for the same purpose.<\/p>\n<p>Most people use LinkedIn for professional networking. According to PCMag, people who use LinkedIn are usually looking to: find a job\/clients, hire or partner with new people, keep tabs on their business acquaintances, and network.<\/p>\n<p>If they have the time, they will browse their newsfeed and LinkedIn Pulse. People also do not log in to LinkedIn as often as they log in to Facebook and Twitter.<\/p>\n<h3>#3. Post about your industry<\/h3>\n<p>I have noticed that whenever I post about my industry (social media marketing or blogging), more people read, comment on and share my posts. Posts that I write on other topics don\u2019t do as well.<\/p>\n<p>According to the source here, the two biggest reasons professionals access content on LinkedIn are to \u201ckeep up with industry news\u201d and \u201cdiscover new ideas within the industry.&#8221; So stick to writing about what you know best \u2013 your industry.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/go.fiverr.com\/visit\/?bta=27080&amp;nci=9662\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener sponsored\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.blogbrandz.com\/tips\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/quality-web-content.jpg?resize=900%2C471&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"quality web content\" width=\"900\" height=\"471\" border=\"0\" title=\"\"><\/a><\/p>\n<h3>#4. Be a bit controversial<\/h3>\n<p>The article I wrote titled, <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/pulse\/20140529181811-1353803-6-reasons-why-i-won-t-add-you-on-linkedin\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">6 Reasons Why I Won\u2019t Add You On LinkedIn<\/a><\/em>, was aimed at helping LinkedIn users improve their profiles. But I gave it a controversial title, which is why it got more comments than my other articles (some from people who were less than thrilled with my list).<\/p>\n<p>So if you want your post to be noticed, commented on, and shared, it doesn\u2019t hurt to be a little controversial. And when responding to comments, just remember that you don\u2019t have to attend every argument you\u2019re invited to.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>&#8220;You don\u2019t have to attend every argument you\u2019re invited to.&#8221;<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h3>#5. Link to your website or blog in your post<\/h3>\n<p>If you\u2019re spending all that time and effort to write and post a great article on LinkedIn, be sure that it leads them back to your blog or website. Either insert links in the body of the article (the best way) or in your Call to Action at the end of the article.<\/p>\n<p>After all, the purpose of becoming known for your expertise is that readers will ultimately click through and visit your website, where they can get to know you and your business better.<\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019re an author posting an excerpt, you\u2019ll want to link back to your author&#8217;s website or, better yet, the book you\u2019re quoting from.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/go.fiverr.com\/visit\/?bta=27080&amp;nci=9559\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener sponsored\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.blogbrandz.com\/tips\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/digital-marketing-services.jpg?resize=900%2C471&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"digital marketing services\" width=\"900\" height=\"471\" border=\"0\" title=\"\"><\/a><\/p>\n<h3>#6. Write short post headlines<\/h3>\n<p>The <a title=\"Optimal Length Of Blog Posts and Other Content Online\" href=\"https:\/\/www.blogbrandz.com\/tips\/optimal-length-of-blog-posts-content-online-infographic\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">optimal length for headlines on blogs<\/a> is 6 words or 55 characters. Only the first 3 and last 3 words of a headline tend to be read, and if your LinkedIn post headlines are too long, they might get truncated and lose their effectiveness.<\/p>\n<p>As of this writing, the longest headline I saw on LinkedIn Pulse was \u201cKilling Over-Communication: An Internal Memo from Asana&#8217;s Founders\u201d, which is well over 60 characters, and the thumbnails accompanying the headline had vanished.<\/p>\n<p>But even if LinkedIn keeps changing its rules, the rules of writing good copy won\u2019t change. So, as a rule, stick to short headlines below 55 to 60 characters.<\/p>\n<h3>#7. Grow your LinkedIn network<\/h3>\n<p>The bigger your network, the more people will be exposed to your LinkedIn posts. Your LinkedIn Followers can exceed your LinkedIn Contacts, as mine do.<\/p>\n<p>But, I believe that having more 1st level connections is the best way to get found, and also makes it easier\u00a0to search for and contact the people you really want to connect with.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-11933\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.blogbrandz.com\/tips\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/priya-florence-shah-linkedin-2022.jpg?resize=906%2C547&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"priya florence shah linkedin 2022\" width=\"906\" height=\"547\" title=\"\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.blogbrandz.com\/tips\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/priya-florence-shah-linkedin-2022.jpg?w=906&amp;ssl=1 906w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.blogbrandz.com\/tips\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/priya-florence-shah-linkedin-2022.jpg?resize=300%2C181&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.blogbrandz.com\/tips\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/priya-florence-shah-linkedin-2022.jpg?resize=768%2C464&amp;ssl=1 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 906px) 100vw, 906px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/williamarruda\/2014\/03\/04\/22-linkedin-secrets-linkedin-wont-tell-you\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">William Arruda<\/a> is a personal branding expert who recommends that you \u201cignore LinkedIn\u2019s advice to only accept connection requests from people you know,\u201d because that doesn\u2019t help you get found.<\/p>\n<p>Since writing that post on the kind of people I won\u2019t add on LinkedIn, I have actually relaxed my own rules a bit. There are very few people I will actively avoid adding on LinkedIn.<\/p>\n<h3>#8. Share your post<\/h3>\n<p>Share the link to your LinkedIn post on all your other social networks \u2013 Facebook, Twitter, and any other relevant networks. Also, share your post with relevant LinkedIn groups, but don\u2019t spam.<\/p>\n<p>Only share with a group if it is of interest to the members of that group. Participate in LinkedIn group discussions, and like or comment on the posts shared by other members before you share your own post.<\/p>\n<p>I hope you\u2019ve enjoyed reading these lessons I\u2019ve shared\u00a0about how Linkedin builds your publishing presence.
